West Sussex County Council has approved plans to extend the Emberway trail network by 12 miles across rural areas near Chichester and Midhurst. The project will connect existing footpaths with new segments through farmland and woodland, creating continuous routes for walkers and cyclists. Funding of £1.8 million comes from local authority budgets and national heritage grants.

Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2025 and finish within 18 months. Officials say the work will improve access while protecting sensitive habitats through careful routing and signage.

Route Details and Timeline

The new sections will link the current Emberway path at Singleton to the village of Easebourne, passing through Cowdray Park and along the River Rother. Engineers have mapped the route to avoid protected bird nesting sites and ancient woodland. Three new footbridges and upgraded stiles will be installed to accommodate diverse users including families and those with mobility aids.

Public consultations held last autumn received over 400 responses, with 78 percent supporting the expansion. Minor adjustments were made to the original plan following feedback from farmers concerned about livestock access. The council will maintain the trails through a dedicated team and volunteer wardens.

Community and Environmental Impact

Local businesses expect increased footfall from visitors using the extended network. Several pubs and bed-and-breakfasts along the route have reported plans to offer guided walks and refreshment stops. Environmental assessments confirm the project will create new wildflower verges and hedgerow planting to support pollinators.

Council leader Sarah Thompson stated the expansion supports wider goals of sustainable transport and outdoor recreation. Monitoring stations will track usage and ecological changes for the first three years after completion. Similar trail projects in neighbouring counties have shown measurable rises in physical activity among residents within two years of opening.
